As fun as the Apple iPhone can be, it still isn’t as user-friendly as many of the newer smartphones in the market today. For instance, while today’s average smartphone supports a separate physical keyboard, the iPhone doesn’t. Unless, of course, you jailbreak your iPhone and use the BTstack Keyboard software.

This bit of software was developed by Matthias Ringwald, a wireless sensor network expert in Switzerland. Ringwald was frustrated at Apple’s refusal to let iPhone owners use the device’s Bluetooth capability for anything more than connecting with other users and using certain accessories. Now, his $5 creation (available at the unauthorized Cydia marketplace) can let owners of jailbroken iPhones use Bluetooth keyboards with their devices.

Ringwald and another developer are now planning to improve on their creation, eventually letting owners of jailbroken iPhones use other Bluetooth devices such as optical mice. There’s also talk of software that lets users play iPhone games with Wii and Playstation 3 controllers — but, of course, only on jailbroken iPhones.

Of course, this is all in hopes that Apple won’t brick iPhones that use the software.
