Being able to say that your microprocessor powers the world’s fastest supercomputer is quite an accomplishment and certainly goes a long way in reputation building. AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) now holds this distinction in the semiannual TOP500 list as the worlds fastest supercomputer, the Jaguar-Cray XT5-HE, was powered by the six-core AMD Opteron platform.
With this kind of processing power, the Jaguar is able to manage 2.3 petaFLOP/S peak performance (theoretical) or 1.75 petaFLOP/S under the Linpack benchmark. Second place this time around went to the IBM supercomputer, Roadrunner, which actually had a drop in performance compared to past performances due to a repartitioning of the system.
Overall, AMD powered the top three supercomputers on the list as they were a component in the Jaguar, Roadrunner and the Kraken XT5. However, Intel still had a strong presence as 79.2% of the machines used EM64T technology while an additional 6 used Itanium.
