After watching the iPod Touch soar through the economic recession unscathed, it would appear from numerous reports, including The Wall Street Journal, that Dell will release a similar android pocket device as early as this year.

Although Dell has yet to comment on the rumour, the company’s founder and CEO, Michael Dell did admit that they were “exploring smaller screen devices” during a speech in March. The Dell device will be similar to the iPod Touch which is an iPod phone without the phone capabilities.

However, Dell users and fans should be cautious about the plans as the project could easily be delayed or scrapped entirely, especially given Dell’s track record with entering new markets. In November, 2008, Dell nixed their plans to enter the digital music market before the holiday season.

Furthermore, launching into the world of pocket sized internet enabled devices will not be easy. First of all, many customers are weary of purchasing an internet device that does not include mobile phone capabilities. Second of all, the market is fairly competitive with smartphones and companies such as Apple, Research in Motion and Nokia.

Dell needs to do something to boost sales. Due to the economic recession, Dell’s profit has tumbled and Hewlett-Packard has overtaken them as the number 1 PC maker in the United States, two facts that most certainly have Dell in hot water.

Perhaps the smaller device is the best way back into the consumer’s hearts, and pocket books.
