Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 Processor Coming

The Intel Pine Trail Atom N470 processor was not the biggest secret in the world as its existence has been known for a while. It looks like Intel may have prematurely announced it today through their Intel PR Chip Shots in a blog post dated for Monday, March 1st. Could someone have an itchy finger over there?

Designed primarily for the netbook category of consumer electronics, the N470 processor is a single core Atom processor that has a clock speed of 1.83GHz, 512k L2 cache and supports DDR2-667. It also includes integrated graphics directly onto the CPU chip.

With the exception of the speed increase, it’s believed that the new Intel processor is similar to the earlier N450 which has a processor speed of 1.66GHz. Although the speed increase may seem negligible, the processor will be used in netbooks which are generally cheaper devices that require better power consumption but offer weaker processor power. Hence, even a subtle performance boost is of some benefit.

Intel expects that over the coming months, OEMs will begin to introduce the new processor in their netbooks, thereby offering distinguished performance for basic computing functions and Internet browsing.
