It’s not the best smartphone camera out there, but the iPhone’s camera is pretty good at taking close-up photos. Now a new App, iMicroscope, takes things to the next level by letting you take high-quality microscopic images. Sadly, you’ll need a microscope to make it work.

iMicroscope is a great App for science aficionados, letting you take pictures of the microscopic world with the help of your microscope. The App works by aligning the iPhone’s camera lens with a desktop microscope’s viewfinder. The results are quite impressive, and it has options to adjust the intensity of the magnification.

Is it compatible with ALL microscopes? The iMicroscope’s creator states that his App “works with any optical microscope which is compatible with human eyes.” The “human eyes” part is funny, I mean, would you design microscopes for the use of dogs, cats, or… Oh, I get it. Lab rats.

The iMicroscope currently sells for US$2.99 at the App Store. Just remember that to put the App to best use, you’ll need to have a microscope lying around, too.
