Seven years in the making, but the 802.11n wireless standard has finally been ratified by the IEEE. The new standard that promised faster data transfer speeds at greater distances was originally proposed back in 2002 but faced opposition from Atheros and Broadcom causing delays with the standard.
The new WiFi standard also spent the last couple of years in an all but final draft stage during which it was known as draft-n. With the ratification complete, a baseline has been achieved allowing hardware manufacturers to confidently include 802.11n WiFi technology into their gear, knowing that there will not be changes in the standard that could result in compatibility issues.
