Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology Powers R/C Cars

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has announced the release of a small hydrogen fuel cell system that is compact enough to be fitted into a remote control toy car. The system was not designed to meet the needs of the low end market, but rather, it was developed for the most serious of hobbyists who may be looking for completely different options for a power system.

In addition to the hydrogen fuel cell system, Horizon also announced the availability of an optional solar powered fuel infrastructure kit that is capable of utilizing both sun and wind power to convert a stored water source into hydrogen fuel which is then collected in solid state cartridges.

Outside of this, Horizon has been a bit limited with the information provided other then to say that their new power system has a total capacity of 12Wh and that compared to standard batteries that are typically found in R/C cars, the Horizon system should offer a 3-4 times improvement in endurance.

The Horizon system certainly won’t offer nitro car like performance, but from the below YouTube video, it does hold its own and is worth a peak. The new power kits should be available around the middle of next month with price still to be announced.
