HTC Desire With Android 2.1

HTC Desire With Android 2.1

HTC has been busy at MWC announcing three new mobile phones, the HTC Legend, HTC HD Mini and the HTC Desire. Of the three, the HTC Desire has created quite a stir with Gizmodo calling this mobile phone “a real iPhone contender in 2010, no matter what Steve Jobs brings out later this year.”

If you’re not familiar with HTC, they are the ones that were contracted to make Google’s Nexus One smartphone and hence, it’s no real surprise that the HTC Desire has a similar form factor to the Google phone.

For hardware specifications, the HTC Desire comes with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor which is generally the norm these days and certainly a step up from Sony Ericsson X10 Mini And X10 Mini Pro which were announced earlier at MWC with 600MHz processors.

Aside from the better processor, is a 3.7-inch AMOLED touchscreen display with 480 x 800 pixel resolution, 512MB ROM, 576MB RAM, a 5MP digital camera with flash and autofocus, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G and WiFi connectivity. Additionally, an optical trackball replaces the physical trackball.

The HTC Desire also sports a new user interface or “sense” display. The custom Android UI includes the “leap” function which allows mobile users to navigate between multiple home screens using a single pinch motion. Finally, keeping in line with the trend we’ve seen out of MWC, the phone will also feature a “friend stream” which adds a social networking component to the device as social networking updates will now be available on a single list.

The HTC Desire should be available throughout Europe and Asia some time in the second quarter of this year, but there is no firm launch date scheduled for the US.
