HP Opens App Store For PhotoSmart Printer

HP App Studio

Everyday, it gets easier and easier to see how open-source technology is going to be the future of all things digital, and HP seems more than ready to jump onto the open-source bandwagon. HP has just recently opened an “App Store” for the HP PhotoSmart Printer, which as early as now already offers a lineup of interesting goodies.

The HP PhotoSmart Printer with TouchSmart Web is a web-connected printer that can receive downloaded programs and applications directly from the Internet. All it takes to access the Printer Application Studio is a button on the printer’s 4.33-inch touchscreen — “Get More.”

So far the user-friendly App Studio has a few nifty programs available, such as photo editing software, Google Maps, applications that let you buy and print movie tickets, get updated weather information, and print out the daily sudoku puzzle, among others.

HP also plans to release the HP Software Developers Kit in the near future, which will eventually let third-party programmers create their own applications for the HP PhotoSmart Printer. With an open-source camera in the works in Stanford University, the future of photography definitely looks fun.
