In an interview with CNET, Dharmesh Mehta, on behalf of Microsoft, confirmed that Hotmail users will have access to a new feature being deployed called Exchange ActiveSync. The new feature will allow email users to push messages to their personal mobile devices.
Although many mobile phones already support ActiveSync, Exchange ActiveSync will be most beneficial to those users that have phones that include support for dual ActiveSync accounts. These would include the Palm Pre, iPhone 4 and Windows Phone 7 devices that will be flooding the market soon. Mobile users that do not make use of an Exchange Server, but have a handset that supports ActiveSync will also be able to utilize the latest Hotmail feature.
According to Mehta, ActiveSync is a more flexible option, which when used in tandem with POP access, will give Hotmail users better synchronization options, something that they have been requesting.
