HBO has said that they are developing their own streaming app which they expect will be ready within the next six months. Once ready, HBO will make the app available to users of the Apple iPad and other mobile devices, thereby bringing live HBO programming to the various devices.
The HBO app will be in addition to another service that the company already has called HBO Go where customers have to be HBO subscribers through their local cable or satellite company in order to view the programming. With this news, HBO has also confirmed their desire to not host their content through the Netflix streaming service as their preference is to go solo in order to generate more traffic and viewers to their own HBO channels and content. HBO believes that their programming will offer customers a perceived value for which they will be “willing to pay a premium”.
In addition to this, HBO is also looking to increase company profits by selling digital content through Apple iTunes and other similar types of services.
