Google Maps Monopoly Game

Hasbro’s classic board game Monopoly has gone worldwide – literally. Hasbro teamed up with Google Maps to open the largest game of Monopoly in history, wherein players can log on to the online game and “buy” streets from all over the world and rack up the cash from rent and payments.

The online game effort, called Monopoly City Streets, went live today, and droves of Monopoly fans signed up and started buying streets and building buildings and houses from the get-go.

It’s absolutely free to play, which makes the online version of the game so attractive – the traditional repackaged board game costs around $40. On Monopoly City Streets, every player starts out with $3 million (play money, of course), and can immediately buy streets and put up buildings. Some of the world’s streets can be pretty pricey, though.

If you want to join the fun, then log on to monopolycitystreets. Be prepared to do a lot of F5′ing, though – the number of people signing up on day 1 exceeded even Hasbro’s wildest expectations who are currently in the process of firing up their servers to accommodate everyone.

In its blog, Hasbro called the day 1 phenomenon “The biggest land grab of 2009.”
