Google’s Gmail Service Is Getting A Redesign

by Mike on July 1, 2011

Over the years, we’ve really seen the evolution of email. Way back in the day, the most common way of receiving email was by having an application (usually Microsoft Outlook) installed on your computer and using this app to send and receive email.

Shortly thereafter, we started to see web based email come on the scene and one of the first more popular services was that of hotmail, but since hotmail, we’ve now got Google’s Gmail which is undoubtedly a heavyweight in this field today. There are many factors which have led to the success of Gmail including its reputation of being owned by Google, its ample space allotment and the fact that there seems to always be new features that are being rolled out with users being able to tweak their Gmail to meet their personal needs.

There is one issue though and that is as Gmail has grown as a service, it has become a little busy and so the search engine design is looking at a redesign. So as to not overwhelm the end user, the redesign will not occur overnight, but will gradually be pushed out in the coming months.

If you want to get a sneak preview as to just what the new design will look like, you can do so by going to the mail settings and then clicking on the Themes link. Within here, there are two new options and these are Preview and Preview (Dense). These aren’t fully functional with all of the Labs features just yet, but they will give you a good idea of just what Google has in store.

Again, the objective of this redesign is to reduce the clutter of the Gmail site without losing functionality. If you’ve had a chance to look at the new themes, do you feel that Google has accomplished this goal?
