Google Superbowl Ad In Third Quarter?

This years Superbowl Sunday that features the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints compete will not only see CBS deploy a new zoom feature but also the prospect of a Google ad during the third quarter of the game.

The news comes by way of an Eric Schmidt tweet posted to his infrequently used twitter account in which he states “Can’t wait to watch the Superbowl tomorrow. Be sure to watch the ads in the 3rd quarter (someone said “Hell has indeed frozen over.”)”. Schmidt’s tweet was really a confirmation of an earlier blog post by John Battelle who cited an unnamed source in saying “Google plans to hit the branded advertising big leagues this Sunday.”

There was no official word from Google in regards to the Superbowl commercial but there is a lot of speculation as to what this ad will be about. Traditionally, Google Inc. has not had a strong presence in traditional media such as television ads, preferring online advertising instead.
Unless Google confirms the specifics of the ad prior to game time, there seems to be two strong contenders for the Google ad, which are Google Nexus One promotion, or “search stories” with many believing it will be the latter.
