Up until very recently, only HTC and Motorola had access to the source code of Google’s Android 2.0 operating system, which comes bundled with the Motorola Droid. But Google has just recently opened the source code up for everyone interested.
The update to 2.0 offers users support for multiple e-mail accounts and exchange, a combined inbox, better search, calendar, and address book, Bluetooth 2.1, and better media playback. It also opens new doors for developers to enjoy. Jumping on the new opportunity, the hacker team Cyanogen has already ported the Android 2.0 update to the G1, the first ever Android handest. They have reported that the handset runs significantly better than before, although they’re still working on enabling audio/video playback.
If you’ve kept tabs on how Apple slams the door on jailbreakers and would rather play it safe with Google, wait for the patch from your phone manufacturer. Patches from all the phone companies should be on the way out soon.
