Google Nexus One Smartphone

Nexus One trademark

It’s well known that Google will be releasing their own Google Android phone soon, the question has become what will be the name of the new phone. According to documents filed through the United States Patent and Trademark Office, Google has filed a trademark for the name Nexus One. Could this be the name of the new Google phone? Many, including the NY Times seem to think this may be the case.

Nexus One however isn’t a name without controversy as it eludes to the Nexus-6 cyborgs, the sixth generation androids in the movie Blade Runner and the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by the late Philip K. Dick.

Needless to say the estate of the late Dick is not pleased with Isa Dick Hackett, the daughter of Philip Dick expressing her feelings of being “shocked and dismayed”. However, this is not the end of the story as Hackett continues to say in reference to Google “My father was a big fan of technology,” she said. “It’s certainly something we would have been happy to discuss and interested in exploring. They only needed to reach out.” I’m sure it may take a bit of time, but if Nexus One is the name that Google wants for there mobile phone, something will be worked out with the family.
