The android powered Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Nexus One has been available in the United States for a few months now and it appears that those in the UK may not have much longer to wait as an April launch date is being targeted by both Google and the UK based mobile telecommunication company Vodafone (LON:VOD).
The information comes by way of unnamed sources close to both companies that revealed that March was the preferred month for the UK launch of the Google phone but that the April time frame is more realistic.
It’s believed that the smartphone will only go on sale through Google’s dedicated Nexus One website and that pricing should be comparable to the Apple iPhone. Unlike Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), the Nexus One has only been available online and this may account for some of it’s sluggish sales which will hopefully pick up now that new retail markets will be available shortly. Google does have a challenge on it’s hand in carving out a niche in the mobile phone market that is currently dominated by Apple’s flagship product and Microsoft’s resurgence with their new mobile operating system Windows Phone 7. However, Google did update the Nexus One in January to include multitouch web browsing, thereby putting it on an even ground with the iPhone.
Both Google and Vodafone were unable to commit on the record the April launch date, only stating that the phone would be available “in the spring”.
