Free Google Public DNS Service

Google has launched their own public DNS resolver, rightly called Google Public DNS. DNS is an acronym for “Domain Name Service”, a fundamental process that converts domain names that human beings understand into IP addresses that computers need for communication. On any given day, networks perform hundreds of DNS queries for each internet surfer and all of these happen seamlessly in the background.

Many of these translations can be complex and can slow internet browsing. The purpose of the Google Public DNS Service is to speed up web browsing as well as protect individuals from DNS exploits.

If you’re interested in using the new DNS service, Google does offer step by step instructions on how to do so but also offers a word of caution that “only users who are proficient with configuring operating system settings make these changes”.
