Google Social Search

Google recently made waves in newsreels both on and offline when it unveiled Google Music, which makes searching for music over Google much, much easier. The news was so well-received that it somewhat overshadowed another Google tool in the works — Google Social Search.

It’s a given that your online network are key to your life on the Internet, and your contacts likely publish their lives on the ‘Net through blogs, tweets, social media updates, etc. So far, it’s been difficult to find such content through the standard Google search — for instance, if you’re looking for your friend’s New York blog, a “new york” search query won’t likely put your friend’s blog on page one.

But Google Labs is currently testing Social Search, which will provide a “Results from people in your social circle for New York” on your search results page. Theoretically, this should show your friend’s blog right at page one — plus a few other tidbits of information from other members of your social network, as well.

Your “social circle” will likely be composed of your contacts on Gmail, Twitter, and Friendfeed. It’s probable that Google will partner with other companies, such as Facebook, and Yahoo! Mail, to fill your contact list. Social Search is still in its testing phases, and its developers welcome all sorts of feedback on the Google Blog.
