Google Image Swirl

Google Images has seen a few changes to improve on image search since it’s inception back in 2001. When first launched, the search results were quite basic and brought up a variety of images through which the internet user was required to sift through. Since then, Google has introduced a “similar images” feature and today, the search engine has launched Image Swirl, an experimental feature available in Google Labs.

Image Swirl expands the technology that powers Similar Images and Picasa Face Recognition and groups images based upon similar themes. Users will be presented with 12 different image themes to select from. Once a user chooses a theme and clicks the corresponding thumbnail, that group or cluster of images will swirl into view so that you can further explore that theme.

Currently, image swirl works with 200,000 different queries and there are plans to increase this number with time.
