In August of this year, Google introduced a new enhancement for their email service, Gmail, in which customers could now make free long distance calls to both Canada and the US. At the time, Google had indicated that this free service would only be available until the end of this year.
Their PC to phone service has been quite popular. In the first 24 hours since its launch, more then 1 million phone calls had been placed and in the first week, the service saw 10 million calls logged. The good news is that Google is now extending free calling for all of 2011.
The service is quite easy to use and essentially, you just dial a phone number like you would on a regular phone. Once you’ve logged into your Gmail account, you will see a “call phone” option located near the top of your chat list and when you click on it, you can either dial a phone number or type in a contact’s name.
