
Today, February 12, 2010 is the opening day of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. To commemorate the occasion, the Google logo on the homepage has been changed. This isn’t the first time that Google has changed their logo, they have now done this multiple times reflect special occasions or festive holidays that would have a wide appeal.
The Olympic games is one such occasion that would fit the bill with athletes descending upon the Canadian city from all areas of the world. The Google logo today comes complete with the five Olympic rings, the symbol of the games. In addition to this, you can see a stylized version of the venue (BC Place) where the opening ceremonies are going to take place and in the background are the Vancouver mountains.
Another symbol of the Olympics that is prominently featured in the new logo is the Olympic flame which replace the letter L in Google. What’s worthy to note is this new logo also takes the full width of the screen. This years games mark the 21st such event that has occurred every four years since 1924. The last winter Olympic games was the 2006 games of Turin, Italy and city to host the next games will be Sochi, Russia in 2014.
As it is the Winter Olympics, we will see all of the expected events and competitions including figure skating, bobsledding, skiing, and what will probably be one of the highlights, if not the highlight, ice hockey.
