We’ve heard about a new service called Google GDrive for some time now, a Google offering that would bring vast quantities of free online storage space for users interested in saving their files in a cloud computing environment. Although Google has not officially announced a GDrive, they have indicated that they are expanding their Google Documents service which sounds an awful lot like what GDrive was to promise.
The announcements pertaining to Google Documents include expanded storage space. Users will now get 1GB of free storage space, up from the 250MB that is currently available. Extra storage capacity will be a premium service with a surcharge added which is kind of odd considering the free space they offer with GMail, their free email service. However this is a start and with others in the industry such as Microsoft’s Skydrive offering 25GB, it may only be a matter of time before we see the space limitation improved.
Other new features announced with Google Docs include the ability to upload virtually any file type regardless of the file extension, although there may be a restriction with .exe files as these could potentially be a haven for malware and other viruses. The file size that can be uploaded to Google Docs has also been increased to 250MB which means you’ll be able to upload larger video files, graphical files or raw images to name just a few.
Expect to see the new features gradually rolled out over the next couple of weeks and when the features have been enabled on your account, you will receive a bubble notification on signon to Google Documents.
