Some time back, Google had launched a new product which they called App Inventor. This wasn’t a mainstream product that was used by the masses, but it was an app that would allow interested users to develop their own Android apps.
When it launched, the premise behind it was that even a novice with no programming knowledge would at least be able to follow the user guides to kick out an Android app, though it wasn’t quite as simple as what was originally proposed. In any case, it looks like Google is closing the doors on this service and the last day of support for Google App Inventor will be December 31, 2011.
As part of their shutdown process, Google has begun to send out email notifications to all users of this application, advising that after the end of this year, any files or data that are saved on the Google servers will be deleted. In other words, if you’re in the middle of a new app, you may want to start thinking about wrapping up development in the next month or so and if there is any data that you can’t afford to lose, you will want to download your project prior to the closure.
Interestingly enough, users that still want to use Google App Inventor after December 31st will not be totally out of luck. It turns out that MIT will be taking over this project from Google and users will be able to continue their development on the MIT servers.
