Google Call Phones Service Sees 10M Calls In Week 1

In late August, Google rolled out a new feature to Gmail users, allowing them to make free calls to any physical phone located in the US and Canada, with cheap long distance rates offered for other countries.

The service is expected to be a direct competitor to Skype and in its first full day of operation, Google recorded 1 million calls being made. Many felt that these numbers may have been slightly inflated as email users look to try out the new service to see what its all about.

Its been a full week since the Call Phone service has started and Google continues to post strong numbers, confirming that 10 million VoIP calls have now been placed. I’ve placed a few calls myself through this service and the audio quality was quite good with no lags. If you want to give it a try, you will need to install Google’s video and voice plug-in. The process is quite easy and you will be guided through once you click the call phone button from within Gmail.
