Google Buys Visual Search Like.com

Head on over to the Like.com website and you’ll be greeted by a top banner confirming that the visual search website has indeed been acquired by Google Inc. (GOOG). For Google, Like.com offers technology and programming that the search engine giant can rollover into its Products engine, thereby enhancing its shopping search function.

Like.com started up in 2004 and was originally called Riya. After the acquisition by Google was announced, Munjal Shah, the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Like.com commented on their website that partnering with Google will allow them to “supersize our vision and supercharge our passion”. No kidding.

Like.com uses a combination of computer vision and adaptive technology to create its visual search function that caters to personal apparel including clothes, shoes and jewelry. The technology that the company has developed allows them to take basic search entries like ‘red high-heeled pumps’ and determine if that pair of red shoes would go well with a given dress color.

Like.com owns a couple of other web properties including Covet.com and Couturious.com. The financial details of this deal have not been disclosed.
