Go Old School With The USB Retro Arcade Controller

Old school gamers rejoice. Fond memories are conjured in their minds when you reference games such as Combat and Yar’s revenge. You probably remember the old black Atari joysticks that moved in 8 directions and had a single bright red fire button. These joysticks are beyond obsolete and probably belong in a museum, but that’s the fun behind them, they bring back memories (assuming you’re old enough).

One aspiring geek has figured out how to take a USB game controller, retrofit it with a DB9 connector and using this port, you can now plug in your Atari joystick. You now have the ability to play modern games using an old school joystick.

While that is certainly a nice controller in its own right, it is in no way something you could call or even consider a Retro arcade controller -

You want a REAL RETRO controller, then there can be none other then this:

Classic USB Joystick Controller:

Pure Retro gaming goodness, plus its hackable and expandable!

Thanks for highlighting this design. What’s nice about the one you mention is that it is a single unit.

The one on ThinkGeek is dual function. It is a game controller that has a DB 9 connector so that you can plug your old Atari 2600 joystick (assuming you still have it) into it, thus allowing you to play the older games, but the USB controller is modern enough to also allow you to play the newer games.
