At CES 2009, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer announced that Windows 7 Beta would be available to TechNet and MSDN subscribers starting today.
This would be considered routine as TechNet and MSDN subscribers download various Windows products all the time as part of their subscription agreement.
What was unexpected is what followed where Ballmer indicated that a free download of Windows 7 Beta would be available to everyone starting Friday, January 9th. To get in on this free deal, you need to be one of the first 2.5 million people to download Windows 7 Beta from the Windows 7 Product Page. Once you get to the download page, you will have your choice of either the 32-bit or 64-bit version OS. One thing to note is that this is a beta copy so it will expire on August 1, 2009.

Yes, the site was down for quite some time. Microsoft did not anticipate the demand for Windows 7 beta. However, according to the Windows 7 Team blog, additional infrastructure has been added and the site is back up.
this is very good o.s.
@Anand, What do you think was the best Windows 7 feature that you came across?
People seem to like Windows 7. They are already looking for antivirus software that works with the beta version. Apparently AVG and Kaspersky are compatible with the new OS (according to the MS Windows 7 team blog).
Most comments about Windows 7 are positive. But this is only the early stage of testing…
