Available starting today as a free download through the online Ovi store is a Skype client developed for Nokia handheld devices. At launch, the free client will work with about 20 different Nokia phones and will offer the Symbian devices the same functionality typically seen with the desktop client.
Hence, mobile users will be able to make free Skye to Skype calls globally, send SMS text messages and instant chat messages as well as share digital pictures. The service will work using a standard WiFi or mobile data connection with mobile users responsible for any data charges that may be incurred. To reduce the risk of surcharges, Skype does recommend upgrading to an unlimited data plan if one is available.
Both Nokia and Skype have developed two versions of the Skype client and it is important to ensure that the correct version is downloaded. One version will work strictly with touchscreen Nokia smartphones while the second one is solely for non-touchscreen devices. Although there are multiple Skype clients, the functionality between the two remains the same.
The relationship of Skype with Nokia is just the start as Skype has shown an interest in developing applications that are compatible with other Symbian smartphones such as the Sony Ericsson. There are also plans to develop a client for mobile devices running on the Android operating system.
