Rumors have been going around lately of an iPad shortage this month. Some say a certain glitch in production risks delaying the launch date, and may even create shortages later in the year. But if a leak from Foxconn’s own part suppliers is to be believed, we’ll still be seeing at least 600,000 iPads this month, plus a million more in April.
But even then, a delay shouldn’t be too surprising — after all, it’s not as easy to manufacture tablet PC displays than displays for, say, notebooks and mobile devices. In addition to the need for stronger glass, the iPad also needs to make sure its relatively-large 9.7-inch screen doesn’t become a problem in the long run.
Still, this piece of news does little to dispel the rumored shortage. After all, news of the shortage ARE rumors — and this bit of news from Foxconn is allegedly a leak. I’m not really sure a rumor can cancel out another rumor.
It could be that the person who started the rumor was short-selling AAPL, or it’s simply one of Apple’s marketing ploys to heighten demand before the actual release. Stay tuned, I guess we’ll find out shortly.
