Universal Studios is counting on consumer interest in their new dual format Flipper discs to boost movie sales. The Flipper CDs will have a digital copy of a movie in DVD format on one side and a Blu Ray version on the other side.
Why would someone want a dual format disc? Universal Studios believes that there are a several advantages to this new media format. First, if you only have a DVD player right now and are looking to upgrade to a Blu Ray player down the line, at least you’ve already got both versions of a movie.
Second, some households may have a mix of DVD drives and Blu Ray drives in the home and these new discs will offer the convenience of working on all of them.
Big screen movies in Flipper format will start to appear this January 2010, with the first movie title to be released in the new version being The Bourne Identity Supremacy Ultimatum. Flipper discs are expected to retail for about $30 per movie title, which is about the same amount for a new movie on a Blu-ray disc. Universal has also promised that the extras will be the same on both media formats, although the Blu-ray version will also offer U-Control and BD Live.
Now all we need is a comfy chair, buttered popcorn and a universal remote such as the iPhone universal remote control to operate our home theater system.
