Mozilla has finally completed Firefox Mobile, and will come bundled with the Nokia N900 handset. Specifically designed for the N900, Firefox Mobile works on Nokia’s Maemo-5 platform — and being open-source, it is a potentially a more powerful browser than most others available today.
Firefox Mobile’s developers aimed to bring a more familiar “PC browsing” feel to mobile device users, including features such as tabbed browsing, bookmark syncing (via Weave), extensions, and add-ons into the mix. This means Firefox Mobile will keep seeing new features and better usability as we go along.
Firefox Mobile supports most of the standards that Firefox for the PC does (including HTML 5), so there shouldn’t be any compatibility problems with this version. Firefox is also being developed for Windows Mobile and Android platforms, so it should be interesting to see how this open-source browser will do against its well-entrenched competition.
Unfortunately, we won’t be seeing Firefox Mobile on the iPhone or Blackberry (restrictions, restrictions). We may see a Symbian port one of these days, but that’s on the back burner for now.
