Firefox Mobile Available For Nokia Owners

The July 4th weekend saw the Mozilla Foundation release their mobile web browser for Nokia N900 and Nokia N810 users. Known as Firefox Mobile 1.1, the mobile browser provides the same functionality as Firefox 3.6 which is available to desktop users and it also includes some features that were previously unavailable.

For instance, the Maemo OS powered phones will support third party add-ons which will extend the functionality of the browser beyond the pristine build. Mobile users will also be able to save webpages in the Adobe PDF format that they can later view offline. As this is a mobile browser, it does have some features that will benefit phone users including a tap to zoom that could assist with basic functions like reading email. This is not mult-touch, but Mozilla has confirmed that later versions of their mobile browser will be able to take advantage of the N900 support of this technology.

As time goes on, we will also see Firefox Mobile available on a number of different platforms including Symbian and Android phones, but there are no plans to offer it up for the older Windows Mobile due to Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7.
