Doug Beaver from Facebook engineering announced a new milestone for the company in that Facebook now hosts 10 billion pictures and counting. The actual number of pictures stored on their servers is actually four times this or 40 billion because they store 4 different sized image of each picture that is uploaded.

To commemorate this event, cupcakes (sorry no iPhone cupcakes) were given to each member of the engineering and operations group. As only a geek could figure out, one of the engineers calculated that if they received one cupcake for each photo uploaded and that they were to stack these up, they would have reached halfway to the moon.

Here are some more interesting facts released by Facebook.

  • 2-3 Terabytes of photos are being uploaded to the site every day
  • We have just over one petabyte of photo storage
  • We serve over 15 billion photo images per day
  • Photo traffic now peaks at over 300,000 images served per second
