Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Active Users

Analysts have been watching the growth of Facebook for some time now and ever more closely since the company went public. It was only a matter of time before the social networking site reached a major milestone in its history and that was to have one billion active users and today, we have confirmation that indeed this has happened.

With the world population estimated to be 7 billion people, this means that one out of every seven people on the globe uses Facebook. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s Chief Executive Officer described the feeling as “humbling”. The last time when we had some solid number for Facebook was back in July when the company announced that there were 955 million users. The site continues to see growth and year over year, Facebook has added 200 million new users.

One important distinction to make is that these 1 billion users that Facebook has announced are active users which means they are users that actually use the site once per month. Often, you’ll hear companies try and pump up their stats by reporting other figures such as registered users which is higher, but by reporting their active users, Facebook is telling us just how many people use the site every month.
