Facebook Chat Drops IE6 Support

The social networking site Facebook announced on their company blog that Facebook Chat will no longer support Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 6 as of September 15th. Over the coming weeks, Facebook plans to introduce some new enhancements to Chat by improving the way in which connections between Facebook users are established and messages sent.

Some of the planned system changes will not work on older browsers like IE6 which is the reason that support is being dropped. One of the biggest customer complaints with Facebook chat is conversations have a tendency of dropping out or freezing all together. Facebook plans to address these concerns and through their blog have committed to ending “those interruptions so that your experience is stable and consistent.”

It’s not a surprise that Facebook is terminating IE6 support. Google had announced in February that they would be ending support for IE6 within Google Docs and their other online properties. This was followed by YouTube ending support on March 13th and even Microsoft has laid this old browser down to rest and will be launching Internet Explorer 9 shortly.
