Microsoft has announced that next week, they will release a record 14 bulletins to fix security flaws in their software. However, Microsoft will not be alone in trying to make their software safer for the millions of global users that they have as Adobe has announced that they too will be releasing an emergency fix for their Adobe PDF Reader and Acrobat.
The Adobe patch was announced after the Black Hack conference during which Charlie Miller described a potential exploitable flaw that exists within the PDF Reader. Although Miller did not provide full details of the problem, many attendees surmised that the flaw would allow malicious code execution using engineered PDF files.
According to the Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT), there have not been any reported attacks in the wild that are based upon this exploit thus far. Adobe’s official comment on this subject was:
This update will resolve critical security issues in Adobe Reader 9.3.3 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, Adobe Acrobat 9.3.3 for Windows and Macintosh, and Adobe Reader 8.2.3 and Acrobat 8.2.3 for Windows and Macintosh, including CVE-2010-2862 which was discussed at the Black Hat USA 2010 security conference on Wednesday, July 28, 2010.
