Moving from the outhouse to the water based toilets was quite an achievement for modern society. Flushing the toilet gave a nice swoosh sound and you knew that the waste would somehow, through the magic of pipes, end up in a treatment facility where the waste would be sterilized.

Global Inventive Industries (Gill) is looking to revolutionize the toilet once again. If they have their way, the water based toilets will be a memory of the distant past. What they are proposing is the EcoJohn Sr.

The EcoJohn Sr is a waterless self contained toilet that houses a burn chamber. After the toilet has been used, waste will move into the burn chamber where it will be incinerated using a 5kW Propane burner. The harmless smoke is then released through the attached vent and the sterile ashes need only be discarded a few times a year.

The benefits of such a system are many fold including the fact that it is environmentally friendly and does help conserve water. Additionally, no sewage or septic tanks are required, which could be an issue in more remote areas.
