The Apple iPad 2 is now available in Japan and has been greeted by the usual line ups that have been seen lately with a new Apple product launch. Originally, this tablet computer was expected to go on sale on the island nation on March 25, but was subsequently delayed due to the March 11th 9.0 earthquake and tsunami.
Officially, the device went on sale at 9AM local time today with Apple fans being able to purchase the device through the usual locations including local Apple retail outlets and other retail stores. Japan is the first of many countries that will be receiving the iPad 2. Starting tomorrow, customers in the UAE, South Africa, Philippines, Macau, India, Hong Kong, Isreal, Korea, Turkey and Malaysia will also be able to buy the tablet. Those in China will have to wait until next month when on May 6, the WiFi only model will go on sale.
It was at the start of March when the iPad 2 was first announced by Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. The device which was available in either black or white had a form factor then measured 33% thinner and 15% lighter then the iPad 1. The device also supports Facetime (or Fring) through its forward facing camera and came with anywhere between 16GB and 64GB of storage space. Pricing was dependent upon your storage needs and if 3G network support was required in addition to the standard WiFi which was found on the base model. Overall, US customers could expect to pay anywhere from $499 to $829 depending upon features.
