In a sit down at CES 2011, Dick Costolo, the Chief Executive Officer of Twitter confirmed that 40% of all tweets on the social networking site Twitter are now from mobile devices, showing the growth and importance of this specific niche.
As part of their appearance at CES, Costolo spoke with Kara Swisher about a couple of different topics including why they were at an electronics show and their overall focus to become more consistent on different platforms, easier to use and also the impact that celebrity users has had on the network overall.
It was during this conversation that Swisher asked about which operating systems and devices are most important to the sites long term growth to which Costolo confirmed that 40% of tweets are from mobile devices, a figure that is up by 20%-25% from just one year ago. If you’re wondering what has caused Twitter mobile growth to explod, it can be attributed to the company’s release of apps that are specific to the major mobile devices including Android, BlackBerry, iPad and iPhone. According to the available statistics, the company’s main website is the most popular, but this is followed by the mobile website and SMS with the Twitter apps for BlackBerry and iPhone being Twitter’s most popular apps overall.
The popularity of Twitter has seen the company grow not just in usage, but also in office staff with Twitter now having 350 employees of which 100 were hired in Q4 1010.
