I’m a firm believer that some of the rage that we see and read about that occurs on airlines is due to absolute boredom. Let’s face it, it can be really tiring and frustrating sitting in cramped seats with little to nothing to do but to stare out a small window looking at clouds. As time passes and frustration builds, for some people, the smallest incident then triggers them into an uncontrollable bout of rage.
Airlines recognize this and over the years have started to offer things to try and reduce or eliminate the boredom. This can be things like meals, in flight movies and newspapers to read. We recently went on a trip to Mexico, and in that flight, each passenger had access to their own TV which was bound to the back of the seat in front of them. I was so amazed to see that as passengers stared blindly at the boob tube, the number of times that they called the flight attendants were substantially less then on other flights I have taken where TVs were not available.
Delta Airlines has now gone one step further. Within the next year, Delta plans to offer wireless internet on board 330 aircraft operating within the US. This will of course come at a cost. Internet access on a flight of three hours or less will cost $9.95 while longer haul flights will cost $12.95. Delta will make use of Aircell’s Gogo as the service provider for their wireless internet.
