Ask a young child what they want to be when they grow up and many will list off several professional occupations that they want to pursue, at the same time. The most common professions you seem to hear are doctor, lawyer, veterinarian, dentist and astronaut.
For young girls, the Barbie doll has been a symbol of hopes and dreams, representing to the child that really anything is possible. Even to this day, many girls that had Barbie dolls as a child, retain them into adulthood with some having huge collections of the toy dolls.
It looks like toymaker Matel has introduced two new Barbie dolls (careers 125 and 126). The new dolls are Computer Engineer Barbie and News Anchor Barbie. What makes the latest two professional Barbie dolls unique and different are these latest two professions were selected in a public vote in which the popular vote went to Computer Engineer Barbie while the girls vote went to News Anchor Barbie.
The Computer Engineer Barbie doll was designed with the assistance of the Society of Women Engineers with the hope that it would encourage more girls pursue math and science and ultimately into the engineering profession. Nora Lin, president of the Society of Women Engineers added “As a computer engineer, Barbie will show girls that women can design products that have an important and positive impact on people’s everyday lives.” Computer Engineer Barbie has that trendsetter look and can be see decked out in a T-shirt with a binary number imprint, pink laptop, pink glasses and a Bluetooth earpiece.
