Cheaper Apple iPhones in June Possibly?

If you don’t currently own an Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone what would be the reason holding you back? Would it be that you prefer the Google Nexus One or some other Android OS variant, or perhaps you like another brand of smartphone altogether. According to Katy Huberty of the financial services firm Morgan Stanley, one of the pressing issues preventing consumers from buying the Apple device is cost. The cost of both the iPhone hardware and service plans are simply priced to high and this is affecting ownership rates both in developed nations such as the United States as well as in emerging nations.

Huberty predicts that in June of this year, Apple will unveil a low cost alternative that may even include gesture based technology in the hopes that this will make the iPhone more palatable to an even larger consumer base.

It remains to be seen whether this prediction is accurate or not. Historical sales figures do paint a slightly different picture. Back in 2009 when Apple introduced the iPhone 3GS, they had dropped the price of the iPhone 3G to just $99. The result.

The high end iPhone 3GS was still the more popular model amongst consumers.
