Low Cost VIA Android OS Tablets On The Way

Taking a page from the success that Apple has had with its iPad lineup, VIA plans to release their own tablet computers. Expected to be available sometime in the second quarter of this year, VIA plans to launch 5 different tablets.

The low cost tablets will range in price between $100-$150 and will run on the Android operating system. Android is a popular OS choice for tablet computers and when Richard Brown, VP of Marketing was asked why the VIA tablets will run Android, his response was “Android is bringing a lot of diversity to the market. There are different sizes and different looks and feels.”

Little is known at this time about the hardware specifications that VIA tablets will use, but suffice it to say that at the price points mentioned, they will not be devices that will compete against the iPad. Rather, the Android tablets will compete in another niche and quite possibly against tablets like the Freescale Smartbook Tablet.
