Last minute donations allowed Wikipedia to meet it’s financial needs to remain operational in 2009. Although Wikipedia is a non-profit organization, it required $6 million in funding to pay for staffing and server maintenance.
Up until Christmas, Wikipedia had raised only $3.8 million, falling short of their financial requirements to maintain operations in the coming year.
A last minute plea by Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales resulted in the organization making up the deficit, thereby allowing it to reach it’s financial needs for 2009. Whales could have gone the route of online advertising on the site to generate revenue, but stated that “Like a national park or a school, we don’t believe advertising should have a place in Wikipedia”.
