You may recall that Dell had a tablet line known as the Streak. The company had high hopes for this product line but unfortunately, things just didn’t pan out for them. Seeing as how hot the tablet market is these days, it really wouldn’t make sense for a major brand such as Dell to not have a tablet offering for consumers and as such, it would seem that the company is once again going to dip its toes in this market.

Compared to Facebook, Google+ is still very young on the scene and has a long ways to go before it has the reach of the number one social networking site in the world. Still, as with any new project, it’s baby steps first and with December now in the rear view mirror, we have some numbers regarding the success that Google+ saw in December 2011.

Based upon the December numbers, Google+ saw its user base grow by 55% and now has a reach which is just shy of the 50 million mark. Officially, Google has always been guarded regarding the release of this information, most likely due to competitive reasons. However, the latest numbers come by way of the online tracking site Hitwise and even these numbers may be an underestimation if you follow Paul Allen. According to Allen and his projections, Google+ actually has a user base that is 62 million strong and this number is expected to increase to 85 million by February.

These are good numbers, but when you see the big gorilla in the room, Facebook, sitting at 800 million users, it’s quite clear that Google+ still has a ways to go. One of the advantages that Google has going for it is that it offers a number of additional services to its user base and so there will be opportunities to cross promote Google+. Android will be a good source for integration as will Google’s email product, Gmail.

It’s easy to see why Google is placing such a strong emphasis on social networking. By some estimates, nearly 80% of people 15 and over use some sort of social networking on a regular basis.
