The BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) hasn’t really been the best partner for Gmail and OpenDocuments, but the latest version — 3.0 — may fix many of the problems experienced by its users. That is, if recently-leaked information is to be trusted.
One update that should be popular with BIS users is the feature that will let them create labels on Gmail using a plugin, as well as sync read/unread statuses better. That means any changes made on Gmail over a BlackBerry will be seen everywhere else — something we’ve only normally seen on services such as Microsoft Exchange.
Another update states that BIS 3.0 will support OpenDocument formats, such as those used by OpenOffice apps, and file types such as Windows Media Audio. And when you experience network problems that aren’t caused by Research In Motion’s servers, BIS 3.0 will tell you the offending carrier’s name.
At this point there’s no news as to when BIS 3.0 will be made available, but it’s likely we’ll be hearing about it in the Mobile World Congress this month, the CTIA next month, and in the Wireless Enterprise Symposium three months from now.
