Several sources have indicated that Research In Motion (RIMM), the designers of the Blackberry smartphone are looking to buy a mobile ad network as a means of generating more revenue for the company. The news follow recent announcements by both Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL), each of whom have bought their own ad networks in Quattro and AdMob respectively.
With the rise of Android phones and the Apple iPhone, RIM has seen some tough times in the Blackberry market and with it have come a drop in share prices. Mobile ads offer a new window to make money, big money, especially when you consider the number of mobile devices that have an Internet connection. To try and get a piece of this pie, RIM tried to purchase Millennial Media, but at $500 million, the asking price was just to high for the struggling company.
Aside from this, RIM has also been facing challenges in other areas including poor sales for The Torch and the possible closure of BlackBerry Messenger and email connectivity in a number countries around the world.
Do you think Research In Motion be able to keep up with the likes of Google and Apple? Have your say in the comments below.
