Picture this, your R&D team have developed the latest and greatest rugged phone that they claim can take the maximum amount of abuse that can be doled out as the mobile phone is “indestructible”. With that claim in hand, you as the CEO confidently take the phone to the world’s largest consumer technology tradeshow CES 2010 and guess what, the phone breaks.
That’s exactly the scenario that played out with Sonim CEO Bob Plaschke who explains just how rugged their Sonim XP1 phone actually is and that if the phone were to break, the consumer would be eligible for a free phone. The claims made were:
- The phone could be dropped from a 10-story building
- It was waterproof and could be submerged for 30 minutes in up to 20 feet of water
- You could drive a nail with the phone
With those comments the bar was set and BBC news reporter Dan Simmons proceeded to dunk the phone in an aquarium filled with water. The phone did not malfunction. Simmons can then be seen smashing the phone on the edge of the aquarium causing the display screen to shatter.
I’m sure it’s just a stroke of bad luck, but still, you don’t want this happening on a world stage.

It is amazing that if you see the video, still the phone works. And anyway Sonim phones are covered by a three year unconditional warranty, which other phones don’t have.
There are videos on YouTube where a Sonim phone is used to drive a nail using the back, not the screen.
