AT&T Outdoor Hotspot in Times Square

AT&T has announced plans to establish a new Wi-Fi spot in Times Square—which is good news for the many iPhone users in New York City, especially in the Manhattan area.

New York City’s current 3G wireless service has been strained from the number of people owning iPhones (or other smartphones) in the city. Upgrades being of little help, AT&T decided to instead install a hotspot in the Manhattan area. It would ease the burden of New York’s service while providing a great spot for tourists to take advantage of their smartphone features, such as the camera, and quickly access the internet.

Wireless service in many major cities share New York’s problem, and with the news of this installment they are hoping AT&T will supply them with more hotspots in the future as well. Service is generally strained in areas with a high population density, so this announcement is welcome in many places across the US where an overburdened wireless service undermines efforts to access the internet, particularly if internet use is for business purposes. Extra hotspots would mean more efficient ways of doing work through the iPhone. While other cities are waiting for their chance, such a decision would depend on how the testing phase of this project turns out, which is currently being undertaken.
